Emerson elementary will not be repurposed! The Miami Dade County school board's proposal to repurpose and close "ten" schools (which included Emerson elementary) has been removed from discussion. As per Rudy Crew, other funds were found to balance the budget shortfall for this academic year. Finally,someone who realized that it was the parents, officials, and mostly the news media, who put our concerns out there for everyone to see. No matter how much air time some people seem to need, it was the parents who made this happen. Thanks to the staff and faculty of Emerson who allowed us to make this happen. We should all thank Ms. Rivas-Logan, Dr. Perez, and Ms. Hantman for voting NO on G-5 against a 6% bonus for the School Board attorney at a time when basic health benefits are threatened. At the same time, we should ask the other Board members what were they thinking when they voted YES and passed it by a majority(Karp, de la Portilla, Barreira, Greer, Holloway, Stinson?
I would also like to express a discontent in Item A-1 being presented in such a manner where Chair Barreira did not allow discussion from the public. However, as was evident in the Public Hearing portion, issues were subsequently addressed.
It is also worrisome to me that at a time when it seems the District’s budget is so limited that it is ready to sacrifice its employee’s health benefits, and almost shut down schools, it is ready to create new and expensive programs such as those listed in the news and below:
• An 800-seat medical arts magnet high school at the former site of
Homestead Hospital, where the school district would partner with
Baptist Hospitals.
• Making South Dade Senior High ''be Coral Reef [Senior High]'' with
magnet academies, including the International Baccalaureate program,
Greer said.
• A four-acre middle and high school with math and science emphasis
at the University of Miami's new campus west of Metrozoo. The school
district is in advanced conversations with UM for the school, Greer
said.
• A small, 700-seat high school that Greer has proposed at
Centennial Middle School in Cutler Bay. The school, which would have
an emphasis on environmental sciences because Cutler Bay plans to go
green, would be an alternative to Southridge Senior High, which is
overcrowded. Centennial has an under-enrollment of 500 students, and
Cutler Ridge Middle School has about 400 vacancies, Greer said.
• A small performing arts school near the new South Miami-Dade
Cultural Arts Center, scheduled to open this fall in Cutler Bay.

After all is said and hopefully "done". I would like to thank all the parents and grandparents who from the beginning dedicated all their time to the fight against the "repurposing" of Emerson. Although this seemed like an impossible task and a super high mountain to climb, Every body stuck together and bravely reached the summit! This goes to show that nothing is impossible and that teamwork is a wonderful thing!!! Congratulations Emerson parents,abuelas and abuelos! You got an A plus!!!!
